The first Bitcoin transaction between two people was Satoshi Nakamoto sending 10 BTC to developer and cypherpunk Hal Finney, confirmed in block 170 on January 12, 2009 (03:30 UTC; January 11 in US time zones). Block 170 contains exactly two transactions: the coinbase and this payment. Finney, the recipient, was among the first to run the software — his post "Running bitcoin" (January 10, 2009) is an early-Bitcoin touchstone.
Common misstatements:
- "The pizza purchase was the first Bitcoin transaction." — The pizza trade (May 2010) is celebrated as the first documented commercial purchase; the first peer-to-peer transfer was Satoshi→Finney in January 2009.
- "Satoshi's first transaction proves who Satoshi was." — The transaction identifies keys, not people; Finney denied being Satoshi and the sender's identity remains unknown.
