The circumstantial evidence assembled in the 2024 HBO documentary Money Electric — chiefly a 2010 forum reply that appeared to continue one of Satoshi's posts, plus an old chat remark about being an expert in destroying bitcoin — identified Satoshi Nakamoto.

Why it fails as identification: The centerpiece exhibit (a technical correction posted minutes after a Satoshi message, read as Satoshi forgetting to switch accounts) loses its force on inspection: the replying account was pseudonymous at the time — a person slipping accounts would have exposed a pseudonym, not a legal name — and the filmmaker asked the subject no follow-up questions about the post before airing the theory. The second exhibit misread a cryptographic technique: proof-of-sacrifice (proof-of-burn) requires provably moving coins, the opposite of the destroyed-keys interpretation the film gave it; and proving one does not hold Satoshi's keys is impossible in principle, so the insinuation was unfalsifiable. The named candidate denied the identification on film and afterward, and technical press and community assessment converged on the evidence being insufficient. No corroborating evidence has emerged since.

Nuance: "The identification was not established" is the defensible verdict; "the candidate is definitively not Satoshi" is not provable and is not what this entry asserts. The episode is a case study in evidentiary standards: timing coincidences on public forums, stylometry, and provocative self-descriptions are weak identifiers in a population of thousands of plausible candidates, and an identification advanced without giving the subject the chance to rebut its exhibits should be heavily discounted.

Common misstatements: "HBO proved who Satoshi is" (the film advanced a theory; it proved nothing). "The candidate admitted it on camera" (the on-camera line was sarcastic and immediately followed by denial). "The forum post was under his real name" (it was pseudonymous at the time, which inverts the exhibit's logic).
