Jeff Booth's The Price of Tomorrow (2020) argues that compounding technology gains — computing, AI, autonomous systems, additive manufacturing, solar — are a deflationary force too large for monetary policy to permanently offset; that recent measured growth is largely a debt-fuelled mirage (the book's own aggregation puts it at roughly $185 trillion of global debt against roughly $46 trillion of global growth, circa 2000–2018); and that letting prices fall, backed by a fixed-supply money, would let people who lose jobs to automation share in technology's gains without large-scale wealth transfers. Mainstream macroeconomics treats this prescription as dangerous: sustained deflation raises real debt burdens (debt-deflation spirals), defers consumption, and can pin policy against the zero lower bound, which is exactly why central banks target a small positive inflation rate rather than price stability at zero or below. On this view, technology-driven relative price declines in specific sectors are real and welcome, but the aggregate price level is a monetary-policy variable, and treating a sector-level productivity trend as if it should set the economy-wide price path conflates two different things.

Both sides can point to genuine evidence — falling technology costs are real; so is the post-2008 and post-2020 record of policy responses to deflationary pressure. What is contested is which force dominates the aggregate, and whether the debt-deflation risk Booth concedes is a solvable transition problem or a reason to reject the prescription outright.
